Understanding U.S. Immigration Policy with World Immigration Hub

At World Immigration Hub, we believe that informed immigrants make stronger applications and smoother transitions. That is why we provide not only consulting services but also educational resources to help individuals and families clearly understand how the U.S. immigration system works. Drawing from our professional experience and resources available at eimmigrationhub.com, we guide clients through the laws, policies, and opportunities that shape their journey to the United States.

The Immigration and Nationality Act (INA)

U.S. immigration law is governed by the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). This legislation provides the legal framework for permanent and temporary immigration into the United States. Each year, the INA authorizes the government to grant up to 675,000 permanent immigrant visas across multiple visa categories.

Importantly, the INA sets no numerical cap on spouses, parents, and children under 21 of U.S. citizens, making family reunification a cornerstone of U.S. immigration. Additionally, each year, the U.S. president consults with Congress to establish the annual refugee admissions ceiling, while humanitarian protections such as asylum and Temporary Protected Status (TPS) remain uncapped but subject to eligibility restrictions.

At World Immigration Hub, our consultants help applicants navigate these categories, identify the right path, and prepare strong applications for immigrant visas, refugee protections, or humanitarian relief.

From Immigrant Visa to Lawful Permanent Residency (LPR)

When someone is granted an immigrant visa—or certain humanitarian protections such as asylum or refugee status—they can apply to become a Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR). Immigrants arriving on an immigrant visa are automatically granted LPR status upon entry.

After five years of residence (or three years in specific cases, such as marriage to a U.S. citizen), LPRs may apply for U.S. citizenship. Though citizenship is optional, LPRs can remain in the U.S. indefinitely and access most employment opportunities.

Our role at World Immigration Hub is to assist clients at every stage: from applying for an immigrant visa, to obtaining permanent residency, to preparing for U.S. citizenship through naturalization.

Family-Based Immigration

Family unity is one of the strongest foundations of U.S. immigration policy. The system provides unlimited visas each year for immediate relatives of U.S. citizens, including:

Spouses
Children under 21
Parents of U.S. citizens (where the citizen is at least 21 years old)

For other relatives, the INA establishes the family preference system, which includes:

Adult children (married or unmarried) of U.S. citizens
Siblings of U.S. citizens (if the petitioner is 21 or older)
Spouses and children of Lawful Permanent Residents

While annual family preference visas are capped, the minimum threshold is 226,000 visas per year, and in practice the total often exceeds 480,000 family-based visas annually.

Our consultants at World Immigration Hub assist with petitions, affidavits of support, income requirements, and eligibility assessments, ensuring every family sponsorship case is professionally prepared.

Employment-Based Immigration

For skilled professionals and workers, the U.S. immigration system offers both temporary work visas and permanent employment-based visas.

Temporary visas include categories such as H-1B (specialty workers), O-1 (extraordinary ability), L-1 (intra-company transfers), and P visas (athletes and entertainers).
Permanent employment-based visas are capped at 140,000 annually, divided into five preference categories.

Navigating employer sponsorship, labor market testing, and USCIS petitions can be complex. That’s why World Immigration Hub provides full-cycle support, connecting clients with U.S. employers and preparing accurate documentation to maximize approval success.

Refugees and Asylees

The U.S. also welcomes refugees and asylees fleeing persecution due to race, religion, political opinion, nationality, or membership in a social group.

Refugees apply from abroad through the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program, subject to an annual ceiling set by the president. For FY 2024, the ceiling was 125,000 admissions.
Asylum is available to individuals already in the U.S. or at a port of entry, with no annual limit.

Refugees and asylees can apply for LPR status after one year.

At World Immigration Hub, our humanitarian immigration specialists assist with asylum applications, refugee sponsorships, and country-specific parole programs such as Uniting for Ukraine.

Diversity Visa (DV) Program

The Diversity Visa Lottery, created by the Immigration Act of 1990, allocates 55,000 visas annually to immigrants from countries with historically low levels of U.S. immigration. Applicants must meet strict eligibility criteria, including educational and professional requirements.

Our consultants at World Immigration Hub provide application assistance and legal preparation for DV lottery winners, helping them secure permanent residency through this unique program.

Other Humanitarian Protections

The U.S. also provides several temporary relief options for individuals facing unsafe conditions:

Temporary Protected Status (TPS)
Deferred Enforced Departure (DED)
Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)
Humanitarian Parole Programs

While these statuses may not directly lead to permanent residency, they can provide lawful presence, work authorization, and safety. World Immigration Hub advises clients on eligibility and long-term strategies for securing more permanent pathways.

U.S. Citizenship

Becoming a U.S. citizen through naturalization requires:

5 years as an LPR (3 in some cases)
Continuous residency and “good moral character”
Passing English, civics, and history exams
Meeting all other USCIS requirements

While not mandatory, citizenship provides security, voting rights, and full access to all benefits of U.S. life.

At World Immigration Hub, we offer personalized preparation programs for naturalization, including interview coaching and exam readiness.
