How to apply for asylum in Azerbaijan easily?

If you're in a situation where you need to seek asylum in Azerbaijan, understanding the process is crucial. Let's break it down step by step.

First, you need to be physically present in Azerbaijan or at one of its ports of entry, such as an airport, land border crossing, or seaport. If you're already in the country, you can submit your application through any official law enforcement body like the police or directly to the State Migration Service.

When you arrive at a border checkpoint or international airport, you can apply for asylum through the State Border Service, which will then send your application to the State Migration Service. If you're in detention or prison, you can submit your application to the administration of the detention facility, and it will be transferred to the State Migration Service.

The first step is to register with the State Migration Service. You can also contact them by phone at +994 12 919 or by email.

During the registration process, you'll need to provide basic information such as your name, place and date of birth, and family composition. You'll also need to explain why you left your country of origin and why you fear returning. Make sure to bring your original travel and identification documents, as these will be held by the State Migration Service until a final decision is made on your application.

Within 15 days of your registration, you will be called for an interview with a government official. This is a critical part of the process, so ensure you and all your family members attend. Children under 18 can be interviewed in the presence of parents or legal representatives.

During the interview, you'll be asked detailed questions about your situation, and your answers will be recorded on an asylum application form. You will also have your photos and fingerprints taken. After the interview, you will receive a temporary certificate which is valid for three months or until the final decision on your application is made. This certificate allows you to legally reside and work in Azerbaijan without needing a work permit.

The State Migration Service will then review your application. According to the law, the decision on granting refugee status is made within three months from the date of registration. If your application is approved, you and your family members who are 16 or older will be provided with a refugee certificate and a travel document.

It's important to note that UNHCR plays a role in monitoring the government’s application of asylum procedures and offers free legal counseling and other assistance to asylum seekers after they register with the State Migration Service
